Why we LOVE this product!
Teens are much more motivated by a project they'll actually use, and a Bluetooth speaker they built themselves ticks that box. The kit uses real electronic components, so it's a genuine introduction to circuits and how speakers make sound.
The bouncing foam balls make the physics visible: you can literally see the sound waves moving.
Two things to weigh: you'll need your own USB power source, and the breadboard wiring requires patience. For a teen who loves music, it's a brilliant first electronics build.

The KiwiCo Kinetic Light-Up Speaker is an electronics kit for ages 12 and up: teens wire a real speaker circuit on a breadboard, then play music over Bluetooth while LEDs flash and foam balls bounce to the beat.
What's inside
- 2 speaker drivers, a transistor, a capacitor, a resistor and LEDs
- A breadboard with a guide, wires and a USB cable
- Wooden enclosure pieces, acrylic and plastic tubes
- Foam balls, screws, nuts, washers, a screwdriver and a wrench

How it works
Build the enclosure, wire the circuit on the breadboard and connect power by USB. Pair a phone over Bluetooth and the music makes the lights flash and the foam balls jump inside the tubes.

About
KiwiCo
KiwiCo was founded in 2011 by Sandra Oh Lin, an engineer, mother, and entrepreneur who wanted to make creative, hands-on learning easier for families. As a parent, Sandra appreciated projects that encouraged children to explore and invent, but found it difficult to consistently find ideas, research activities, and gather all the necessary materials. She created KiwiCo to make those enriching experiences more accessible.
The company began as Kiwi Crate, offering activity boxes designed to help children learn through making and experimenting. As the range expanded to serve more ages and interests, the business adopted the name KiwiCo in 2017 to reflect its broader collection of projects and educational experiences.
KiwiCo develops activities across science, technology, engineering, art, geography, and other subjects, with projects designed by a team of educators, designers, engineers, and makers. The company also gathers feedback from children to help ensure that its projects are engaging, age-appropriate, and fun to complete.
KiwiCo's mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators by helping children build creative confidence and problem-solving skills. Through hands-on discovery, it encourages kids to become active creators, experiment with ideas, and learn by doing.
