Why we LOVE this product!
This is one of our favorite kinds of kit: real physics that produces something beautiful. A pendulum swings, a pen draws, and suddenly a child is experimenting with weight and motion to get a better spiral.
Turning the designs into cards and keychains gives the art a purpose, which kids love.
Two things to weigh: it needs a bit of table space while it swings, and at $49.95 it's on the pricier side for a single project. For a curious, artistic seven-year-old and up, it's a standout STEAM kit.

The KiwiCo Pendulum Art Machine is a wooden harmonograph that kids build themselves: a swinging pendulum platform moves the paper under a gel pen, drawing intricate spiral and geometric patterns automatically.
What's inside
- Wooden frame and pendulum platform with ropes
- Gel pens and glossy drawing paper
- Materials to turn designs into greeting cards and shrink-plastic keychains
- Instructions
How it works
Swing the platform, lower the pen and watch the pattern appear. Change the swing speed, add weight or move the ropes and the design changes completely.
What kids learn
- Physics of pendulums: how weight, length and swing speed affect motion
- Experimenting: changing one variable at a time and comparing results
- Math and art together: geometric patterns created by motion
- Patience: fine-tuning the machine for the best drawing

About
KiwiCo
KiwiCo was founded in 2011 by Sandra Oh Lin, an engineer, mother, and entrepreneur who wanted to make creative, hands-on learning easier for families. As a parent, Sandra appreciated projects that encouraged children to explore and invent, but found it difficult to consistently find ideas, research activities, and gather all the necessary materials. She created KiwiCo to make those enriching experiences more accessible.
The company began as Kiwi Crate, offering activity boxes designed to help children learn through making and experimenting. As the range expanded to serve more ages and interests, the business adopted the name KiwiCo in 2017 to reflect its broader collection of projects and educational experiences.
KiwiCo develops activities across science, technology, engineering, art, geography, and other subjects, with projects designed by a team of educators, designers, engineers, and makers. The company also gathers feedback from children to help ensure that its projects are engaging, age-appropriate, and fun to complete.
KiwiCo's mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators by helping children build creative confidence and problem-solving skills. Through hands-on discovery, it encourages kids to become active creators, experiment with ideas, and learn by doing.
