Why we LOVE this product!
We picked MEL Physics because the kits turn textbook ideas into things kids can hold: a motor that spins, a model that levitates on magnets, a liquid that glows. Building it is what makes the concept stick.
It stands out for how reusable the sets are; MEL says most include enough parts to run each experiment twice, which helps when a sibling wants a turn.
Two things to weigh: it costs more than most craft-style boxes, so the annual plan makes the most sense if your child takes to the first few kits. And some builds are fiddly for 8 year olds, so plan on helping.

MELPhysics
MEL Science Physics is a monthly build-it kit for kids 8 and up. Each box contains the parts to build working models and run experiments, such as an electric motor, a liquid nightlight or polarized-light stress patterns, with video guides and VR lessons in the MEL Science app.
What's inside
One new kit arrives each month with everything needed to complete it. MEL says most sets include enough components to repeat each experiment twice, and many of the mechanisms can be reused. It currently lists 18 physics kits:
- Electric Motor
- Luminescence
- Polarized Light
- Heat Transfer
- Liquiosity
- Vision Physics
- Magnipulation
- Gyroscope
- Magnetic Levitation
- Spectrum
- Vacuum
- Aerodynamics
- Mic and Speaker
- Electrostatics
- Lenses
- Alternative Energy
- Reflections
- Hydrophobicity
How it works
You pick one or more subjects at checkout and can switch subjects at any time from your MEL account. A new kit ships every month. You can pause or cancel with one click in My Account and reactivate later.
The app adds interactive video guides and VR experiences on a phone or tablet.
What kids learn
The kits cover electricity and magnetism, light and optics, heat, fluids, air pressure and sound. Kids follow a procedure, observe what happens and then see the explanation in the app, which builds the habit of asking why something works.
Good to know before you buy
- MEL lists subscriptions from $29.90 a month, and its 12-month plan costs the same as 8 months.
- Kits can't be bought one at a time.
- MEL says its projects meet US CPSC requirements for educational sets and have been tested with kids.
- You'll need a phone or tablet for the app content.
- Younger kids in the 8 to 9 range will want an adult nearby for the first few builds.
- Buying it as a gift? Enter the child's address at checkout.
- MEL doesn't publish a holiday shipping cutoff on its subject pages, so order early if the first box needs to arrive by a set date.
How it compares
Physics suits kids who like building and taking things apart. For a 5 to 7 year old, MEL STEM is the gentler start; for a child drawn to reactions and colors, MEL Chemistry starts at 10.
Who it's for
Kids 8 to 14 who ask how machines and gadgets work, families looking for a screen-light weekend project, and homeschoolers who want physics they can touch.
